Bad Karma on the reefThings had been slow, but as the gathering darkness set in, my Cornish Snax was suddenly snatched at the edge of the reef. After a short, but spirited fight, a beautiful 58cm bass lay on the rocks. At this I messaged Ian on the Walkie-Talkie. I hadn't quite got to grips with the thing at this point, and my repetitious ramblings must have amused him greatly! Handy things these though. This fish must have been very unhappy at this, and was obviously determined to seek revenge! When things went quiet again, I moved a little further along the reef. Somehow, as I went to cross a shallow pool, my feet went from under me, sending me sprawling across the rocks, rod flying ahead.A cursory glance appeared to show no damage done to the rod (priorities!), and apart from a grazed finger and wet trousers I was none the worse for wear. However, on the next cast there was a loud crack, as the top 18 inches of the rod ended up somewhere in the English Channel! Strike 1 to the bass!In the past I would have tried to fish with the remains of the rod, but the resulting tangles around the end of the rod would make things tricky in the dark.An early bath was on the cards, but not content with his work, the bass struck again, as I took another tumble - this time my head making the acquaintance of a rock. Strike 2 to the bass!Ian carried on fishing while we chatted away, but there were no further bites - the word must have got out among Billy's mates. Strike 3 to the bass!On a more serious note, I was lucky not to have been seriously injured. I would never fish a mark like this alone now. Stupidly, I had forgotten to take my Personal Locator Beacon; although walkie-talkies can be useful for speaking to your fishing buddy, they wouldn't allow you to call for help, and if there's no phone signal you're in trouble. I've ordered new studded knee boots, as the studs on these were decidedly worn.The helpful folks at Lowen Chy Angling fixed me up with a nice new rod.
